Tips For Aspiring Lawyers

The preferred educational background for students preparing to attend law school is rapidly changing. Political science degrees were once considered the best preparation for a future legal career. Aspiring lawyers often received bachelor degrees in pre-law and avoided specialization. Liberal arts degrees were traditionally considered to be an adequate preparation for a legal career in the twentieth century. For all but the most committed generalists, however, aspiring lawyers in the information era are now turning to the sciences and technology side.

The Technology-Driven Legal Careers

To thrive in the technology-based, global market of the twenty-first century, students are increasingly advised to tailor their undergraduate studies to the future. Much of the work that lawyers will be performing in the new economy will demand a scientific background. Lawyers who practice in the areas of technology and intellectual property law, including patent and copyright work, will need to have a solid grounding in the sciences. In the next century, there will be a high demand for lawyers with advanced knowledge in the fields of engineering, computer science and information technology.

The Natural Sciences and International Relations

Undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry and other natural sciences will also add value to the resumes of aspiring lawyers as they apply to law school and enter the legal marketplace. The many global businesses focusing on medical and environmental research will require legal advice from lawyers who understand the natural sciences.

Many of these thriving high-tech companies will operate on a global scale. These companies, and others in the business services and finance industries, will be seeking advice and representation from lawyers who are capable of making deals across international boundaries. To meet the needs of these multi-national businesses, there will be an increasing demand for lawyers with proficiency in multiple languages and who have studied international law and finance.

Selecting an Undergraduate Course of Study

Through summer jobs, networking and informational interviews, aspiring lawyers should learn as much as possible about the evolution of the legal profession. While there will continue to be work for lawyers with degrees in government and the liberal arts, much of the demand for lawyers in the twenty-first century will arise in the fields of science and technology. Students leaning toward traditional majors in the liberal arts would be well-advised to consider taking up a minor in a scientific or technical discipline. Narrowing your focus may well expand your career horizons.
